The 4 Working Streets of the Old Quarter
Most visitors walk the same ten streets. This is the walk I give friends who stay longer: the working quarter of herbs, tin and fabric, where the guild system is still a living economy. It is slower, quieter and, to me, the most honest part of the Old Quarter.
The route Suzy designed
- Herbs of Lan Ong
The medicine street smells like no other place in Hanoi. Roots, bark and remedies explained. - Fabric on Hang Vai
Bolts of cloth and the bamboo and rattan workshops nearby. - Metal sounds
Tin on Hang Thiec and copper on Hang Dong, hammered the way it has been for centuries. - Slow finish
Coffee on a quiet corner and time for the questions the busy streets never allow.
This tour is for you if
- You have already seen the famous streets and want the real working quarter
- You are curious about herbs, metalwork and everyday trades
- You prefer quiet streets to crowded headline sights
- You ask how things work, not just where they are
Questions
Is this route touristy?
Honestly, no, and that is the point. These are working streets where workshops serve Hanoi first. Expect real trade, fewer souvenirs, and time to watch.
Can I photograph inside the workshops?
Always ask first. Your guide will ask the owner for you and translate; most makers are proud to be filmed once they are asked properly.
What happens if it rains?
Light rain is fine, most stops are under cover. If weather makes walking unsafe, Bao Son Travel rearranges the date with you in writing before the day.
