O Quan Chuong, the Old East Gate

The last surviving gate of the old citadel, still standing in the middle of the traffic at the east of the quarter.

The eastern streets of the Old Quarter near the old gate

O Quan Chuong is the only one of the old city's gates still standing, a small weathered arch where Hang Chieu meets the river side of the quarter. Traffic flows around it all day; most people pass without noticing they have just driven through eight centuries of city wall.

It takes five minutes to see properly: stand back on the pavement, read the worn inscription, and look at how the street pattern still bends around where the wall ran.
